Volkswagen is presenting the newly developed VW Tiguan
at the 2015 IAA. In this case, "new" means completely new -
revolution instead of evolution. That is because the second generation Tiguan
is the first Volkswagen Group SUV whose design is based on the MQB platform,
which is future oriented in all of its aspects.
"XL" Tiguan with long wheelbase
For Volkswagen, the new Tiguan marks the beginning of
an SUV product offensive. In upcoming years, the brand will be launching other
innovative SUVs that are precisely tailored to specific markets in a wide
variety of segments worldwide. Volkswagen will be extending the range of SUV
vehicles it offers, especially in the USA. Forecasts indicate that the SUV
share will also increase significantly in China.
Additional SUV growth will
also occur in Europe. Unlike in Europe, car drivers in the USA and China prefer
versions with a longer wheelbase. That is why the new Tiguan was systematically
developed for two different wheelbases from the start. The "long" Tiguan
will be introduced to specific markets in spring 2017.
All-round vehicle - new Tiguan is "The SUV"
The MQB improves all aspects of the Tiguan. The body
proportions of the latest Volkswagen SUV are notably sporty, the design shows
charisma in all respects, and the vehicle's weight was reduced by over 50
kilograms compared to the previous model with Euro-5 engines. A gigantic leap
forward has been made in terms of the vehicle's interior space and boot space.
For instance, when the new Tiguan is loaded up to the rear seat bench, it
offers 615 litres of boot space; when the rear seat backrests are folded, this
results in a cargo capacity of 1,655 litres, which represents an increase of
145 litres. Meanwhile, the engines are showing efficiency gains. A broad range
of eight engines is offered; their power outputs range from 85 kW / 115 PS to
176 kW / 240 PS.
The engines are more powerful, yet they are up to 24 per cent
more fuel-efficient than those of the previous model with Euro-5 engines. The
new 4MOTION Active Control system also makes it easier than ever to
individually adapt the all-wheel drive to all possible use conditions. Thanks
to the superior concept of the drive system, the Tiguan is designed for
enormous trailer loads of up to 2,500 kg.
Meanwhile, assistance systems perfect
the vehicle's convenience, dynamics and safety (including Front Assist with
City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Lane Assist and Automatic
Post-Collision Braking System as standard). Online services add new service
dimensions (including automatic accident notification, online traffic and
parking space information, vehicle status report). App Connect lets the
on-board electronics integrate all of today's smartphones of the Apple and
Android worlds into the functional features of the infotainment systems, and
even tablets become an integral part of the automobile thanks to the Media
Control app. This has resulted in a Tiguan with which Volkswagen is extensively
redefining the A-SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) segment. The Tiguan is not a
crossover between different worlds - rather it has created its own new and
authentic SUV world. An SUV that satisfies all expectations - both on-road and
off-road. "The SUV."
Design concept - revolution instead of evolution
In the second generation Tiguan, Volkswagen designers
have created an SUV that transfers a new design quality to this segment in a
progressive and competitive way. The precision and logic of its lines as well
as its clear and unmistakably dominant character have led to a visual profile
of the Tiguan that clearly differentiates it from its competitors. The exterior
and interior also form coordinated units in perfect harmony. This resulted in a
new original - a masterpiece.
Safety plus - SUV of the 21st century
Illustrating how the Tiguan is an example of a new
type of SUV is its cutting-edge compatibility with other participants in
traffic. To put this in context: Technologies fitted as standard equipment,
such as the new active bonnet, City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian
Monitoring and the Lane Assist lane departure warning system improve the
overall safety of the new Tiguan in everyday traffic.
Exterior design - precise and confident
In the second generation Tiguan, Volkswagen designers
have created an SUV that transfers a new design quality to this segment in a
progressive and competitive way. The precision and logic of its lines as well
as its clear and unmistakably dominant character have led to a visual profile
of the Tiguan that clearly differentiates it from its competitors.
Engines - TSI and TDI
The many different equipment configurations may be
combined with a total of eight Euro-6 engines. In this class, Volkswagen
provides a turbocharger, direct injection, stop-start system and battery
regeneration as standard. The four petrol engines (TSI) produce 92 kW / 125 PS,
110 kW / 150 PS, 132 kW / 180 PS and 162 kW / 220 PS of power. The four diesel
engines (TDI) produce 85 kW / 115 PS, 110 kW / 150 PS, 140 kW / 190 PS and 176
kW / 240 PS of power. The base engines of the new Tiguan are launching with
front-wheel drive. All of the other Tiguan versions offer all-wheel drive
either as an option or as standard. Compared to the previous model with Euro-5
engines, the four-cylinders engines in the new Tiguan are up to 24 per cent
more fuel-efficient. Compared to the retired model with Euro-6 engines,
progress has been made that results in fuel savings of up to 10 per cent.
